A Brief History of Handheld Power Tools

The very first tool to be powered by electricity was a drill created in Germany in 1895 by C and E Fein. It was difficult to use and very basic, but it started the ball rolling.

In 1914 in America a much more user-friendly drill was designed by Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker based of the look of the Colt .45 Pistol.

Throughout the twentieth century the variety of electric power tools increased such as angle grinders, circular saws, jig saws and so on. Of course, these were all still corded tools that needed plugging into an electrical outlet. They were also cased in metal which was strong but heavy and could potentially cause danger of electric shocks if the tool malfunctioned.

It was in 1957 that Bosch developed the first power tool, a hammer drill, to have a strong fibreglass re-enforced casing. It wasn’t long before other manufacturers followed suit.

A battery powered cordless tool, an electric drill, was developed by Black and Decker in the USA in 1961. This was powered by Nickel-Cadmium batteries and was not very efficient for commercial or industrial use. Plug in tools performed much better in terms of power and run time while ever all cordless tools continued to be powered by Nickel-Cadmium.

With the advent of Lithium-Ion batteries in the middle of the 2000’s things began to change. Re-charging was much more efficient in terms of time and frequency and the tools themselves were considerably more powerful meaning they were appropriate for commercial and industrial use.

Milwaukee Tools were the first to harness Lithium-Ion power for their cordless tools, but the other companies soon followed suit.

The possible applications of cordless technology also increased and gradually a greater and greater variety of cordless tools and devices joined the market.

Any tradesman or regular DIYer will naturally use their power tools a great deal. The more they are used the more likely the power cell will degrade, meaning that it will hold its charge less well, need re-charging more frequently and take longer to complete a charge. This could cause a great deal of frustration and even, potentially, loss of hours.
