Security systems are designed to detect intrusions, such as unauthorized entry, into your home, business or institution.

Single purpose systems

Some alarm systems serve a single purpose burglary protection. The most basic alarm consists of at least one sensor to detect trespassers and an alerting device to indicate the intrusion.

A typical security alarm employs the following components:

• Alarm control panel that reads sensor inputs, tracks arm/disarm status, and signals intrusions.
• Sensors that detect intrusions in a variety of ways and can be located at the perimeter of the protected area, within it, or both.
• Alerting devices that provide the dual purpose of warning occupants of intrusion and potentially scaring off burglars. Typically, these are bells, sirens, and or flashing lights.
• Keypads that allow the owner to operate the system.

Combination systems

Some systems combine intrusion alarms with heat, smoke and carbon monoxide detection. Others combine motion detection with CCTV.

Multi-role systems

Becoming more common are multi-role home security systems which not only have detection and surveillance inside the building but also driveway surveillance with a two-way microphone that enables the system owner to communicate with visitors and delivery personnel as well as intruders from a remote location via their smartphone.

Although systems are often hard-wired into the home’s mains electricity, they also have a battery power supply as a backup in case of power cuts etc. Also, some remote sensors are powered by batteries. It is often easy for owners of systems to forget these important backup batteries.

One of the top producers of home security systems is Yale. They recommend batteries be changed every 18 to 24 months even if the system has given no warning about low power, to ensure continued monitoring and security.
